Expressed Level of Job Satisfaction among Librarians in University Libraries in South-South, Nigeria

Abstract

The Study investigated the expressed level of job satisfaction among librarians in university libraries
in South-South, Nigeria. It focused on three dimensions of job satisfaction: nature of work, salary/fringe benefits and promotional opportunities, as measures of librarians’ level of job satisfaction. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The entire population of librarians in the twelve federal and state-owned university libraries located in the six states that make up the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria constituted the study sample. “Librarians” Job Satisfaction Questionnaire”, developed by the researcher, was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face-validation by three experts-two in library and information science and one in measurement and evaluation. The questionnaire was trial-tested for reliability on 20 librarians and scores obtained were calculated using Cronbach Alpha method, and an overall reliability coefficient value of 0.87 was obtained. In all, 226 usable copies of questionnaire were returned, out of a total of 271 distributed, yielding a response rate of 83.4 percent. Descriptive statistics of mean ( ) and standard deviation (s) were used to analyse the data collected. The results of the study revealed that librarians in the study area were satisfied with their jobs and the various aspects of their jobs. The implications of the findings were highlighted. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that management of universities in Nigeria should improve the existing working conditions so as to elicit higher job satisfaction among library professionals.
